The Philadelphia Eagles already have to replace one legendary coach. But they won’t have to worry about filling the shoes of another.

Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio will return for the 2026 season, according to a Wednesday night report from The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jeff McLane.

The news came hours after Eagles offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland announced his departure after 13 years with the franchise.

The status of Fangio, one of the best defensive coordinators in the NFL, had been up in the air.

PhillyVoice’s Jimmy Kempski reported on Sunday that Fangio recently informed the team that he was retiring before being convinced to stay. But even then, his decision to stay seemed shaky at best.

Losing Fangio would have been a devastating blow. He joined ahead of the 2024 season and was instrumental in the Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX run and victory.

Fangio’s defense was one of the best in the league again in 2025. It was the offense’s failures that doomed the Eagles throughout the season and led to an early playoff exit.

The Eagles already lost defensive backs coach and rising star Christian Parker to their NFC East rival. Parker was hired as the Dallas Cowboys’ DC.

And on the offensive side of the ball, it’s been an offseason of change for Philadelphia’s coaching staff. The Eagles removed offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo before hiring Green Bay Packers assistant Sean Mannion as their OC.

The Eagles also hired Josh Grizzard as their passing game coordinator, and the status of quarterbacks coach Scot Loeffler is very much in doubt.

But at least the Eagles won’t have to worry about Fangio leaving, which would have been a significant setback at this stage in the coaching carousel.
