The optimism surrounding Quinshon Judkins’ recovery just hit a major speed bump. While the official word from the Cleveland Browns in late December was that surgery to repair his fractured fibula and dislocated ankle was a “success,” local insiders are starting to paint a different picture.
On ESPN Cleveland, host Tony Rizzo dropped a bombshell that has the Dawg Pound on edge. According to Rizzo, an anonymous source recently spotted the star running back still in a heavy walking boot.
“It’s not good,” Rizzo noted regarding the sighting. Questions as to whether Judkins will be ready for training camp naturally arise from this, as do concerns over his future explosiveness.
Why the Walking Boot is a Major Red Flag
When Judkins went under the knife on December 23, 2025, following that gruesome hit against the Bills, the recovery window was set at four to six months. In a perfect world, he should be transitioning toward light mobility right about now.
Instead, being tethered to a boot in February suggests the bone or the ankle stability isn’t where doctors want it. For a back who relies on the violent cuts and explosive power required for Todd Monken’s new “power-spread” scheme, any delay in his running progression could be a massive blow to the 2026 outlook.

The RB Room: A Total Wildcard
This update leaves GM Andrew Berry and the front office in a potentially tight spot. Can they truly rely on Judkins to be the bell-cow back Monken needs to balance the offense?
The Nick Chubb Factor:The timing couldn’t be worse. Nick Chubb is currently a free agent after a stint in Houston. While fans are clamoring for a “homecoming,” Chubb is 30 and didn’t look nearly as dynamic coming off his own career-altering injuries.Draft or Sign?: With Jerome Ford a free agent, and Dylan Sampson seen as more of a change-of-pace back, the Browns may be forced to look at the draft or a veteran bridge option in free agency earlier than anticipated.
If Judkins isn’t ready for OTAs or training camp, the “bell-cow” responsibilities in Cleveland are wide open—and the answer might not currently be on the roster.
