Twelve years later, the Seattle Seahawks have made it back to the Super Bowl, going head-to-head with NFL dynasty, the New England Patriots. With LMU students favoring the Seahawks, this Sunday’s game will be highly anticipated to see who takes home the Vincent Lomardi Trophy.
Super Bowl LX is taking place this Sunday, Feb. 8 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, as the two teams go head-to-head in the showdown for the right to take home the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
The path to the Super Bowl was not easy. After two close conference championship games on the AFC side, the New England Patriots beat the Denver Broncos 10-7. On the NFC side, the Seattle Seahawks beat the Rams 31-27, ending the postseason run of the beloved home team. Interestingly enough, after beating the Rams, the Seahawks have LA and the majority of the NFL fanbase rooting for them this Super Bowl.
Janai Williams, interim sports editor:
As someone who grew up 30 minutes from Philadelphia, I must preface this statement by acknowledging that my rightful team is the Philadelphia Eagles. However, with the big game coming up and my team falling short (we got next year, trust), I’m throwing my support behind a fellow team of birds, the Seahawks. Is it true that I like their colors and mascot more than their opponents? Yes. But this decision ultimately boils down to my strong dislike for the Patriots. If we’re being honest, no matter who New England was up against, they would have my support. I think a key factor in the game will be the Patriots’ quarterback, Drake Maye. But the Seahawks should be making defensive plans to stop Maye, which hopefully come to fruition on Sunday. Sam Darnold, the Seahawks’ quarterback, needs to play the best game of his life and secure not only the franchise’s second Super Bowl win in history, but also the MVP trophy. Anyways, if you need me on Sunday, I’ll be repping blue and green while screaming at a TV and singing along to Bad Bunny.
Isabella Vargas, sports intern:
I’m no football expert, but from watching the NFC game between the Seahawks and the Rams a few weeks ago, I have a feeling Seattle will get the win. With the Las Vegas Raiders being far, far, far away from a Super Bowl and the Rams falling short, I have no other choice but to root for the Seahawks. There is absolutely no way I would root for the Patriots. How are they so good? I ask myself that question every time I’ve seen them play, consistently dominating the game. Something about Tom Brady just doesn’t sit right with me. Yes — I know he’s retired, but once a Patriot, always a Patriot. Yes, I know he’s a minority owner of the Raiders, but then again, I still don’t like him or the Patriots. I’ve got full faith in the Seahawks getting the win this Sunday. They’ve built up a good team this season, and it’s about time they go back to the Super Bowl.
Agree to disagree — at least among LMU students, there is a strong feeling that the Seahawks will take home the win, especially among those from Washington.
“I want the Seahawks to win,” said Elijah Dallas, music major, supporting his home team. “I’m from Washington … so I want them to win, and I believe that they will win.”
For others, rooting for the Seahawks in this Super Bowl comes from deep hatred towards the Patriots. Eagles fan, Cooper Ford, biology major, shared how strongly he felt about his hatred towards the Patriots and their quarterback, Maye.
“Ideally, Drake Maye tears his ACL and never plays football again. So, I really am hoping Seahawks come through,” said Ford. “[The Patriots] had a cupcake season the whole way through. Drake Maye is not a good quarterback. I can not stress [enough] that I don’t want the Patriots to win.”

Others, such as Joshua Johnson, theatre arts major, echoed Ford’s hatred for the Patriots. As a San Francisco 49ers fan, Johnson feels the Patriots robbed his childhood team of too many Super Bowl wins, having secured seven rings as a franchise so far.
To simply put his thought heading into this Sunday, “F— the Patriots, forever and ever,” said Johnson.
The Patriots having won too many times is a common theme among students who decided not to root for them. Devin Nieto, marketing and finance double major, says it’s time to share the wealth.
“I think it’s time for Seattle, finally,” said Nieto. “I think the [Patriots] have won enough.”
Through all the hate, one student showed the Patriots some love. Kea Adunagow, marketing major, shared that he is rooting for the Patriots this weekend. Based on their games this season, he believes the team is much more structured and could take home the win.
“They have key players who I feel like have experience in the playoffs, [like] Stefon Diggs, Lil Drake [Drake Maye], but Stefon Diggs specifically. I feel like at least having a wide receiver that has legitimate playoff experience … that would help the offensive side,” said Adunagow.
Fresh off winning Album of Year at last Sunday’s Grammy awards, Bad Bunny will take the stage for the Apple Music, Super Bowl halftime show. This marks the first time since dropping his album “Debí Tirar Más Fotos” that he will perform in a U.S. state following his decision to exclude U.S. tour stops outside of Puerto Rico. His performance is highly anticipated, given the unrest seen across the country following the increase in ICE raids and presence in major cities.

With all this football talk, let’s not forget about the halftime show. Grammy-winning artist Bad Bunny is set to perform this Sunday, and for some, like Dakota Threats, film and television production major, this is the most anticipated part of the night.
“I’m only thinking about the halftime show; I’m rooting for Bad Bunny,” said Threats.
With the LMU campus leaning toward the Seahawks taking home the win, it will be interesting to see whether students made the right choice backing the Seahawks this Sunday.
But now, you can have your say. Vote in the poll below and let us know who you’re predicting to secure the championship ahead of Sunday night.
