The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have generally taken a conservative approach in the offseason. Jason Licht was notably aggressive during Tom Brady’s tenure, accommodating Brady’s free agency wishes, but both before and after Brady, Licht has leaned on drafting and retaining internal talent rather than making big free agency splashes or blockbuster trades.

Recent NFL offseason chatter has centered on Las Vegas Raiders pass-rusher Maxx Crosby. With several sources suggesting his time with the franchise might be winding down.

NFL insider Jay Glazer hinted during Super Bowl media availability that Crosby’s tenure with the Raiders is “most likely done”. This claim was echoed in a Yahoo Sports segment, where Glazer discussed potential trade scenarios. Another report noted that Crosby has reportedly expressed his desire to move on, even sharing that sentiment with Raiders owner Mark Davis.

Adding another layer to the story, a contract clause that becomes fully guaranteed on March 14, 2027, could influence any potential trade, as it would increase Crosby’s salary and complicate negotiations.

In Desperate Need of a Pass-Rush

The Buccaneers’ defense has looked disjointed, failing to consistently disrupt opposing quarterbacks and generate pressure. Despite having drafted and signing talent, they’ve struggled to string together a solid pass rush.  This lack of pressure has allowed offenses to operate with ease, putting more stress on the secondary and impacting Tampa Bay’s overall defensive effectiveness.

Crosby’s Value and Fit

Crosby brings significant value to the Buccaneers’ defense at age 28, with a contract extended through 2029. He offers a relentless work ethic and leadership. He would pair well with Yaya Diaby to form a strong edge-rushing duo. One where Diaby could thrive in a supporting role. Crosby’s durability and ability to play through injuries make him an appealing consideration for Tampa Bay.

Trade Compensation

Crosby’s price tag is likely steep, potentially costing multiple first-round picks or a package including top draft assets and/or young players. While Jason Licht is typically cautious with draft capital, Crosby’s impact on the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl prospects could make the investment worthwhile.

Chucky Loves Crosby

Jon Gruden, former Buccaneers Super Bowl-winning head coach, recently told The Drive with TKras that the Bucs should pursue a trade for Las Vegas Raiders star pass rusher Maxx Crosby, citing Crosby’s transformative impact on a defense and comparing him to Bucs legend Simeon Rice.

“Yeah, I mean, if you’re anybody, you make a big play for Maxx,” Gruden stated. “If you’re the Raiders, you’re one of the dumbest franchises in America if you let him outta there. He’s under contract, and he’s the best player on the team — I think he’s arguably the most impactful edge rusher in football. Absolutely, I think that’s a winning edge that a great defense has, it’s a fourth-quarter pass rush. When we got Simeon Rice, things changed for us.”

Money Talks

Acquiring Crosby would be a challenge, and the Buccaneers would need to consider his hefty contract. He signed a three-year, $106.5 million extension with $91.5 million guaranteed, and he’s only played one year of that deal. The Bucs would likely need to absorb the remaining four years of his contract, which could be a significant factor in any potential trade.

Gruden is convinced Crosby would be a game-changer for the Buccaneers. He pointed to the impact Micah Parsons had on the Green Bay Packers after being acquired, suggesting Crosby would have a similar transformative effect on Tampa Bay’s defense.

“I think the Buccaneers need to take a page out of the Green Bay Packers — they went out and got Parsons,” Gruden said. “Perhaps Jason Licht can swing a deal to get a great rusher, and I’m sure he’s looking at the guys that are available in this draft, as well. That’s an area that the Buccaneers, I think we all realize they’ve got to improve upon.”

Crosby is a top-tier pass rusher in the NFL, with 69.5 sacks since 2019 and at least 10 sacks in three of his last four seasons.

The BR Rub

Adding Crosby would be an impactful move for the Buccaneers. Addressing a critical pass rush deficiency and bolstering their Super Bowl title hopes.

However, the feasibility of such a trade hinges on the Raiders’ willingness to part with their star defender and the Bucs’ readiness to meet or exceed their valuation of Crosby’s contributions. It also depends on Licht breaking character and making a huge trade.

Unfortunately the reality is we don’t see this happening. While Licht has a lot of positives on his resume, making bold trades isn’t one of them.
