Editor’s note: Roman’s official title will be senior offensive assistant.
The New York Giants are hiring veteran coach Greg Roman to join their offensive staff, a move that bolsters head coach John Harbaugh’s efforts to build an experienced unit in East Rutherford.
The move, first reported by The Athletic’s Charlotte Carroll, confirms Roman’s addition to the offensive side of the ball. His exact title remains undetermined, but some reports indicate a likely focus on the running game, potentially as a run game coordinator or offensive assistant.
Roman, 53, brings deep expertise in ground-and-pound schemes, play-action passing, and tight end utilization—hallmarks of his career.
Roman previously worked extensively with John Harbaugh as the Baltimore Ravens’ offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2022, following roles as tight ends coach and assistant head coach. That tenure included transforming the Ravens’ offense around Lamar Jackson, earning Roman AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year honors in 2019.

He also coordinated offenses for the San Francisco 49ers (under Jim Harbaugh, leading to Super Bowl XLVII), Buffalo Bills, and, most recently, the Los Angeles Chargers (2024-2025 under Jim Harbaugh), where he was fired after a playoff loss.
Harbaugh had interviewed Roman for the offensive coordinator role, which went to Matt Nagy, but pursued him anyway after missing out on Todd Monken. Roman’s ties to the Harbaugh brothers date back to Stanford (2009-2010) and the 49ers.
A New Jersey native, he now reunites with John Harbaugh to help revitalize the Giants’ offense, centered on second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart.
