Commissioners voted 7-3 to create district that will finance new domed stadium set to open in 2031

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) -Wyandotte County commissioners voted 7-3 Thursday to approve a STAR bonds district that will house the Kansas City Chiefs’ new domed stadium and finance its construction using sales taxes.

The stadium will sit at the northeast corner of 126th and State Avenue near the Azura Amphitheater and is set to open in 2031.

Residents living near the proposed site have mixed reactions to the development.

Neighbors voice concerns and support

John Wheeler, whose home sits near the land plot for the new stadium, said he has concerns about the project.

“I think it’ll be disturbing the peace a little bit,” Wheeler said. “Kind of a way to take advantage of our tax system, to be honest. Cause they may say it doesn’t affect our taxes, but it will, eventually.”

Wheeler also worried about traffic impacts, referencing the current Chiefs stadium in Missouri, where “the highway gets backed up and it would be the same thing here.”

Elizabeth Hampton, who was born and raised in Kansas City, Kansas, supports bringing the Chiefs across the state line.

“It’s going to bring a lot of traffic to the area, I think it will benefit the area financially as far as all the up-and-coming things that are being built in this area,” Hampton said. “We don’t have to drive 30 minutes to the Chiefs stadium and park so far away from home.”

Hampton said she loves seeing “the area up and coming, it’s being complimented in the best way possible.”

Mayor addresses concerns

Kansas City, Kansas, Mayor Christal Watson said she wants to address residents’ concerns about the STAR bonds agreement.

“We are not giving away the community,” Watson said. “We have a deal that we need to be very careful how we execute it, how we negotiate it. And I feel like we are in a really good place with the state to be able to do that.”

Watson said there will be oversight over the next several years as the city prepares to welcome the Chiefs.

“We have made the best of some of the worst conditions. We have been a resilient community. That is what I am most excited about. Whether it is the Chiefs, whether it is the Royals, whether it is anybody coming into this community,” Watson said.

The mayor said Wyandotte County is open for business for developers and that this is the best way to grow Kansas City, Kansas.
