The New York Jets are hiring former Pittsburgh Steelers tight ends coach Alfredo Roberts for the same position, according to Omar Ruiz of NFL Network.
Roberts is the second coach from Mike Tomlin‘s staff to be hired by the Jets, joining defensive line coach Karl Dunbar.
Roberts was the Steelers’ tight ends coach for five seasons (2021-25). He played a big part in the development of Pat Freiermuth, Connor Heyward and Darnell Washington. Prior to his time with the Steelers, he was the tight ends coach for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2020 and running backs coach for L.A from 2017-19.
Roberts is one of the longest-tenured tight ends coach in the NFL. He also spent time as the tight ends coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2003-05), Cleveland Browns (2007-09), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2009-11) and Indianapolis Colts (2012-15). The Jets will be the seventh NFL organization that Roberts will work for.

Roberts, a Fort Lauderdale, Fla. native starred as a tight end at the University of Miami, winning two National Championships. He was selected in the eighth-round of the 1988 NFL Draft BY the Kansas City Chiefs. He played three seasons in Kansas City before moving on to the Dallas Cowboys where he was a part of two Super Bowl-winning teams in 1992 and 1993.
After Tomlin stepped away from his post on Jan. 13, the team’s decision makers told the assistant coaches they were free to pursue other opportunities and won’t be retained unless the new head coach wants to rehire them. Mike McCarthy only retained quarterbacks coach Tom Arth and linebackers coach Scott McCurley. McCarthy planned on keeping defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander, but left to become the defensive pass game coordinator and DBs coach with the Minnesota Vikings.
All but three of the Steelers coordinators and position coaches from 2025 have already been hired elsewhere. Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, outside linebackers coach Denzel Martin and wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni have yet to be hired.
The Steelers’ tight ends coach position is still vacant.
