The Los Angeles Chargers and Kayvon Thibodeaux are a trade that makes too much sense to ignore as the NFL offseason approaches. The Chargers have been aggressive about reshaping their defense into a true contender, and adding an elite edge rusher like Thibodeaux could be a key piece.
Meanwhile, the New York Giants are entering a phase under new head coach John Harbaugh where they need to act fast. This also isn’t a move brought out of nowhere as Thibodeaux missed the final 7 games of the 2025 season with a shoulder injury, and is on the final year of his contract.

Why the Chargers Would Target Kayvon Thibodeaux
It is worth noting that a return to Southern California would be ideal for Thibodeaux. He starred at Oaks Christian High School, and while the Rams are also in Los Angeles, they are loaded at edge rusher with Byron Young and Jared Verse. The Chargers present the clearer path to a realistic landing spot.
The Chargers’ defense has improved, but it still lacks a consistent, game-wrecking presence off the edge after losing Joey Bosa in 2024 & with Khalil Mack potentially gone this offseason.
While Tuli Tuipulotu has elite potential, Los Angeles needs a true star, especially with the loss of defensive coordinator Jesse Minter. That is exactly what Thibodeaux could provide.
Thibodeaux has already proven he can generate double-digit sack production, win one-on-one matchups, and disrupt games even when he does not show up in the box score.
There is also a storyline element that makes this movie even more compelling. Thibodeaux played with Justin Herbert at Oregon, and the two built a strong relationship during their college careers.
Thibodeaux once called Herbert “a future all-time great,” and a reunion in Los Angeles could bring out the best in both players as leaders of a franchise looking to contend.
Kayvon Thibodeaux’s Contract Makes This Realistic
Thibodeaux is currently playing on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract, worth $14,751,000 million for the 2026 season. After that, he becomes a free agent, so this would be the only problem that arises because L.A. would have to give Thibodeaux a contract before the end of the 2026 season.
For a player of his caliber, that number is extremely manageable for a team with cap flexibility like the Chargers. This is not a bloated veteran contract. This is a young, elite defender still entering his prime years at age 26.
Why the Giants Could Consider This
The Giants are in a complicated roster position. They have multiple needs across the roster, but Thibodeaux’s position is not one of them. They have a top-5 rusher in Brian Burns as well as a young star in Abdul Carter.
Turning Thibodeaux into premium draft capital could be the best use of resources rather than letting him go in NFL free agency after the 2026 season. If the Giants want to sign him to a massive contract, they’d better have a plan to utilize Carter, Burns, and Thibodeaux together.
When they were all healthy, Thibodeaux and Carter both saw about a 70% snap share. The Giants had the 7th most money allocated to the edge rusher position, and currently are slated to have the most money allocated there in 2026 so far.
