KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – When the Seattle Seahawks take on the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX, one of their biggest fans will come from Rocky Top.
Tennessee softball head coach Karen Weekly grew up in Edmonds, Washington, 30 minutes north of Seattle.
In 1974, the NFL awarded the city an expansion franchise, but the team needed a name. So, a Name-the-Team contest was created.
20,000 entries were submitted, including one from Weekly’s 12-year-old sister, Kristi.
Kristi, along with 152 others, submitted the name Seahawks. And thus, a lifelong fan was born. Unfortunately, that lifelong fan has never gotten to see the Seahawks play in person.
But now, after a five-game stretch to open the 2026 season, Super Bowl Sunday happens to be an off day for the Lady Vols. So, Weekly is taking the quick trip from Clearwater, Florida to Santa Clara, California for her first-ever Seahawks game.
Super Bowl LX is a chance at revenge against the New England Patriots after Malcolm Butler’s heroics in Super Bowl XLIX.
“Malcolm. You just got to say Malcolm, and we all just got gut punched,” said Weekly. “Lifelong fan, grew up in Seattle. I am really fired up for this game.”
20 years after Seattle made its first Super Bowl appearance in Super Bowl XL, the Seahawks will go for title No. 2 with their fan No. 1 in attendance.
