The Denver Broncos cut veteran wide receiver Trent Sherfield ten games into the 2025 season, a surprising decision that we didn’t see coming. Sherifled apparently didn’t see it coming, either.
Sherfield eventually landed on the New England Patriots‘ practice squad, and the Pats are set to face the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl on Sunday. While speaking to media members during Super Bowl media week, Sherfield said it was a “big shock” to be cut by the Broncos in November.
“It was a shock,” Sherfield said, via Andrew Mason of DenverSports.com. “It was a big shock. Sean [Payton] had called me up, we spoke, and he was real cordial about it. I talked with George [Paton] and Sean and I was shocked by it. I think some other people were also shocked by it as well, too. My agent was shocked by it.”
Despite the unexpected cut, Sherfield said he doesn’t hold ill will toward the team.
“But again, I wouldn’t — I don’t hold any bad blood or anything like that,” he said. “It’s business at the end of the day. That’s what type of league we’re in; we’re in a business. [I] picked up the pieces and moved on.”

After signing a two-year, $6 million contract with the Broncos last spring, Sherfield totaled three receptions for 21 yards and played 51% of the special teams snaps before being cut. He is yet to appear in a game with the Patriots and would need to be elevated to the game-day roster today to be eligible to play on Sunday.
