The Washington Commanders shared a statement from the family of Christian A. “Sonny” Jurgensen III announcing his passing at the age of 91, honoring both his legendary football career and his life beyond the field.
The family described Jurgensen as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and said they are immensely proud of his accomplishments, including his place among the legends in Canton. While fans remember his golden arm and fearless style of play, they emphasized that to those closest to him he was steady, humorous, and deeply loving.
They noted his appreciation for teammates, colleagues, and friends throughout his life, adding that while he has taken his final snap, his legacy will remain a lasting part of the city he loved and the family he built. The family said they are comforted by the joy he brought to so many, and encouraged fans to celebrate his life by sharing stories, smiles, and memories of the game he loved so much.
Jurgensen’s career began in 1957 with the Philadelphia Eagles where he played for seven seasons. He became a Washington Redskin in 1964 and played here for eleven seasons, becoming a franchise legend.
