NBC’s five-hour Super Bowl pregame coverage for the game between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks will have plenty of angles. One of those will be a short documentary by longtime sports reporter Peter King, who will examine the importance of high school football.

King, who is best know for his work with Sports Illustrated for nearly three decades (1989-2018), traveled to Alabama, Alaska, Nebraska and New Mexico, for a seven-minute documentary named Football in America with Peter King.

The captivating video takes fans from Winnebago, Nebraska to Santa Fe, New Mexico to Juneau, Alaska and finally Prattville, Alabama. In between, King makes a stop at Williams College for Division III football in Massachusetts.

The story begins in Nebraska with the Winnebago Indians, winners of the 2025 South Dakota 9A All-Nations high school football state championship. The All-Nations Football Conference is a 9-man high school football league (17 teams) in South Dakota and Nebraska for schools that have at league 50-percent Native American student enrollment.

After stop at Williams College, King ventures to Santa Fe, New Mexico where he checks-out the New Mexico School for the Deaf that plays 6-man football. Last season the Roadrunners finished 3-4.

King then leaves the Lower 48 for Juneau, Alaska for a look at the Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears. King points out that each football player raises $2,400 to defray travel costs for road games, which average about 875 miles per road contest.

The story ends with King checking-out his first-ever girls’ flag high school football game between Prattville and Spain Park in Alabama.

Flag football is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, with 20 million players globally, and will make its Olympic debut in Los Angeles in 2028. Recently, NFL clubs voted to support financially the development and launch of a professional flag football league. In addition, the NCAA recently approved the addition of flag football to the Emerging Sports for Women program, an important step in establishing flag as a varsity women’s sport across the NCAA. Flag football is now offered for girls at the high school level in 38 states, and more than 100 colleges and universities have women’s flag football programs.
