When the New York Jets were looking for a new offensive coordinator, one of the more popular names available was former Houston Texans play-caller Bobby Slowik. That was until the Miami Dolphins made him their offensive coordinator in late January.
Nonetheless, the Jets still targeted a member of the Slowik family to aid their coaching staff.
New York agreed to terms with now-former Dolphins safeties coach Ryan Slowik, the older brother of Bobby and Steve, who’s currently an NFL scout for the San Francisco 49ers, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
#Jets coach Aaron Glenn continues to build out his staff, this time hiring Ryan Slowik as their safeties coach, source says.
Slowik joins NYJ following four seasons with the #Dolphins. Other NFL teams have looked at Slowik as a future defensive coordinator.

The addition of Slowik to the defensive room is the latest hire by head coach Aaron Glenn to fix a defense that was among the worst in the NFL. Plus, the brotherly favor wrinkle — the Jets’ safety coach is the brother of the Dolphins’ offensive coordinator — makes for some intriguing headlines.
Clearly, courtesy of the coaching staff makeover, the New York Jets roster is relying on coaching changes to be the catalyst for major improvement.
Jets add another familiar coaching name
The Slowik family is well ingrained in NFL history. The Slowik brothers watched their father, Bob, coach on the defensive side of the ball for the Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, and Green Bay Packers over the course of three decades.
New York is hoping Ryan can help fix a position group in desperate need of wholesale changes.
For years, the safety position has been a Gordian Knot for the franchise. Tony Adams, Andre Cisco, Jordan Whitehead, Chuck Clark, and Ahstyn Davis are among the many faces who have taken their turns at the position in recent years. The Jets even invested a third-round pick in one of them, Ashtyn Davis.
There are plenty of young players to work with going into 2026, though.
The development of former fourth-round pick Malachi Moore will be important for Slowik to work with. Other additions are expected as well.
Ryan Slowik has a strong track record of getting the best out of safety rooms perceived as lacking top-tier talent. If he can get the group playing the best it has in years, the more popular Aaron Glenn’s overhauled New York Jets coaching staff will look going into the 2026 NFL season.
