GLENDALE – The Arizona Cardinals are expected to revamp its quarterback position heading into next season. While many believe the franchise will achieve this in the 2026 NFL draft, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that it will look in free agency at a former Green Bay Packers quarterback. Free agent Malik Willis will one of Arizona’s top target during this free agency period, which is shocking given the team’s connection to the young quarterback.

Cardinals connection to Willis:
The 26-year-old was drafted back in the third round of the 2022 draft by the Tennessee Titans. A member of the Titans front office at that time was Cardinals general manager Monti Ossenfort. It is clear that Ossenfort is likely to still a fan of Willis’ game, despite seeing him only his rookie season, where he threw three interceptions and zero touchdowns.
However, Willis looked to just need a change of scenery as he got traded to the Packers in 2024 offseason. In his first season, Willis started two games and went 2-0 and throwing for 550 passing yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions. This past season he appeared in four games, but only started one to bring his yearly total to 422 passing yards and three touchdowns.

Willis seemed to find his footing in Green Bay, which is the home of head coach Matt LaFleur, the brother of new Arizona coach Mike LaFleur. While the Packers will continue to have franchise quarterback Jordan Love lead the charge, Matt could give his brother some insider info about Willis that could lead to him signing with the Cardinals.
With how the quarterback situation is shaping up, Willis could easily become the starter in the Valley. Kyler Murray will be traded and Jacoby Brissett going 1-11 as a starter last year, Arizona will need to find a new option. Willis brings in some young blood to the room and would be a cheap option to gift him his first starting opportunity in the NFL.
Could Cardinals take a gamble with Kirk Cousins in 2026?
