Keenan Allen has played 13 seasons in the NFL, and 12 of those seasons have been with the Los Angeles Chargers. Allen is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and the 33-year-old wide receiver will have to decide whether to re-sign for next season or retire.

In a recent interview on The Zach Gelb Show, Allen made his intentions with his future clear. He said he plans to return to play next season, crediting younger players like wide receiver Ladd McConkey and quarterback Justin Herbert with helping him extend the longevity of his career.

“Absolutely. Body feels good, healthy. Being in the locker room around guys like Ladd [McConkey], Justin [Herbert]-you know, like we talked about it. It keeps me young and able to do what I’m supposed to do,” Allen said.

Allen Wants to Return to the Chargers Next Season

Allen added that he fully intends to play for the Chargers next season. He played one season with the Chicago Bears after the Chargers traded Allen to the Bears in March 2024 for a 2024 fourth-round draft pick.

Allen ultimately returned to Los Angeles on a one-year, $8.52 million contract as a free agent in 2025. He caught 81 passes for 777 yards and four touchdowns in 17 games with the Chargers this season.

During last year’s training camp, Allen said the Chargers “[felt] like home”.

“Just being around the colors, being around the facility, the organization, the people,” Allen said in August, per the Chargers official team website. “Definitely feels like home.”

The Chargers would benefit from re-signing Allen for next season. He has a close bond with Herbert and brings multiple seasons of veteran experience with the franchise. Los Angeles is hopeful its offensive line will be stronger next season, as both Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater are expected to return from injuries in 2026.

With Alt and Slater back in the offensive line, the Chargers could utilize a wide receiver like Allen to work with Herbert. Allen’s market value is approximately $6.8 million annually, according to Spotrac. That is slightly less than the salary he agreed to in his contract with the Chargers last season.
