For most of the year, the Seattle Seahawks’ propensity for turnovers loomed as their biggest Achilles heel.
Stacy: Super Bowl-winning Seattle Seahawks created their own identity
The Seahawks committed 28 turnovers in the regular season, which was second-most in the NFL. Quarterback Sam Darnold was responsible for the bulk of those giveaways, turning the ball over a league-high 20 times with 14 interceptions and six lost fumbles.
But when it mattered most, Seattle flipped the script in a major way.
The Seahawks committed zero turnovers over their final four games – beginning with their Week 18 win over the San Francisco 49ers and ending with their 29-13 Super Bowl triumph over the New England Patriots on Sunday night.
In doing so, the Seahawks matched a franchise record with four straight turnover-free games. The only other time they achieved that feat was during the 2001 season.
Seattle also made history as the first Super Bowl champion to go its entire postseason run without committing a turnover, according to ESPN Insights.
That’s pretty impressive for a team had just three turnover-three games over the first 17 weeks of the season.
The Seahawks’ top-ranked scoring defense lived up to its “Dark Side” nickname on Sunday night, holding the Patriots scoreless for three quarters while racking up six sacks and three takeaways with relentless pressure on second-year quarterback Drake Maye.
With their defense playing like that, Darnold & Co. didn’t need to be spectacular on Sunday night. More than anything, they just needed to get out of their own way.
They did just that.
And while it’s not the most glamorous storyline, it’s a big reason why the Lombardi Trophy is headed back to the Pacific Northwest.
