The San Francisco 49ers have been all over the place leading up to Super Bowl 60, which will be held at their home stadium (Levi’s Stadium) in Santa Clara, California.

Earlier in the week, former 49ers quarterback Steve Young, wide receiver Jerry Rice and cornerback Deion Sanders shared the stage at Nike’s Chase the Smoke event at The Nike House in San Francisco.

The trio shared stories of their time with the 49ers, but the best moment may have come when Sanders explained the reason he left San Francisco after his lone season with the team in 1994.

“You know why I decided to go to Dallas, because I was also playing baseball out here for the Giants, and I’m sitting up at a sports bar, and I’m looking at this little white dude wearing No. 21 in preseason, and I said, ‘Oh, Lord, Jesus. I guess I’m not going back there,'” Sanders said. “That’s how I found out that I was not going to be a 49er again.”

Young’s reaction to this revelation was hilarious.

“Are you kidding me? I thought you abandoned us,” Young said after having his head in his hands for a minute.”

Young continued to feel disappointment for several minutes, eventually falling back in his chair and sulking for a while as the conversation went on.

The 49ers won a Super Bowl in Sanders’ lone year with the team and haven’t been back since. Young played another five seasons with San Francisco but never played in another Super Bowl.
