Ahead of the Super Bowl this past weekend the Miami Dolphins were exploring what the future of its franchise looks like at the quarterback position. And as of today, it doesn’t appear as if its with Tua Tagovailoa.
It was reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Miami would like to trade Tagovailoa this offseason and is also willing to pay down some of his salary in order to find a trade partner. The development comes after new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan and head coach Jeff Hafley were noncommittal on his future with the team.
Tagovailoa is coming off a disappointing campaign throwing for a career high 15 interceptions which led to him being benched in favor of rookie Quinn Ewers for the remaining three games of the season.
Miami signed Tagovailoa to a four-year $212 million extension last July, which is at the root of the financial hurdle the franchise would need to overcome to move off of him. If the Dolphins were to release Tagovailoa this offseason, the transaction would result in $99 million in dead salary cap.
Either way moving off of Tagovailoa will be difficult but it is no longer and if but when scenario.
