The Kansas City Chiefs have been waiting for tight end Travis Kelce to make his decision on whether to return in 2026 or go off into retirement.

On Sunday, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported that Kelce was set to meet with the Chiefs after the Super Bowl to discuss the veteran’s future.

“The perennial Pro Bowler, who had a resurgent 2025 to reassert his place among the game’s best despite being 36 years old, has not made a firm decision on his future,” Rapoport wrote. “However, he has been in touch with his team about a potential return and Kansas City wants him back, sources say.

“The plan is to reconvene after the Super Bowl to finalize a plan that works for both parties.”

Travis Kelce #87 of the Kansas City Chiefs looks on prior to the game against the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium on January 04, 2026 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Super Bowl has come and gone, and the Chiefs and Kelce have yet to reveal their plans. However, a potential replacement for Kelce became available on Monday.

On his Instagram account, Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku announced that he would not return to the team in 2026. He wants to join another organization in free agency.

“Cleveland, first off I love you,” Njokue posted. “These 9 years have been a beautiful journey. I’m am so grateful for all the memories we shared together. Thank you to The Haslams, (general manager) Andrew Berry and the whole browns organization for everything!! All my teammates I shared the battle with I’m so grateful for you guys.

“The time for me to find a new home has come and all I can think of is just the gratefulness in my heart. The city of Cleveland will forever be home #ChiefOut.”

Maybe it’s time for the Chief to come to the Chiefs.

Njoku, 29, was selected by the Browns in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He earned a Pro Bowl appearance in 2023. He’s recorded 384 receptions for 4,062 yards and 34 touchdowns during his 118 game appearances.

In 2022, Njoku signed a four-year contract extension worth $56.75 million. He recorded 33 receptions for 384 yards and four touchdowns in 2025.

The veteran tight end could join Kansas City to try and chase a ring in 2026. The Chiefs do have cap space issues, which could mean Kelce would have to take a pay cut from the $17 million he made last season if he returns.

Njoku could be a cheaper option for the Chiefs if Kelce decides to move on from his playing days.
