Ray Handley, a two-time Super Bowl winner as an assistant on Bill Parcells’ New York Giants teams of the 1980s and 90s, has passed away at age 81.
The news was broken on Handley’s nephew’s LinkedIn page, stating his uncle passed away on February 5.
Handley was Parcells’ running back coach from 1984 through 1990 and won two Super Bowls. He coached such players as Rob Carpenter, Joe Morris, Ottis Anderson, Maurice Carthon, and Rodney Hampton.
When Parcells parted ways with the Giants after the team won Super Bowl XXV in 1991, Handley was chosen to succeed the future Hall of Fame coach in a controversial move. Many thought defensive coordinator Bill Belichick would get the nod.
The Giants went 14-18 in Handley’s two seasons at the helm and failed to qualify for the postseason during those years.
