Brian Callahan is interviewing for the Giants’ quarterbacks coach vacancy.
The New York Giants continue to seek experienced candidates to help Jaxson Dart’s growth as an NFL quarterback.
According to NFL Media insider Mike Garafalo, the Giants are interviewing Brian Callahan for their vacant quarterbacks coach role under offensive coordinator Matt Nagy.
Callahan was let go as head coach of the Tennessee Titans midseason after going 1-5, and 4-19, in his 23-game tenure. He had previously been the offensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals for five years, where he helped Joe Burrow and Co. reach Super Bowl LVI in 2021.
Callahan is interviewing to replace Shea Tierney. Tierney had been the Giants quarterbacks coach under previous coach Brian Daboll, who was of course fired on Nov. 10 after going 20-40-1.
Tierney was not retained by new Giants head coach John Harbaugh and instead joined the Titans as quarterbacks coach under Daboll, who was named their offensive coordinator under head coach Robert Saleh last month.
Brian Callahan Will Interview For Giants’ Quarterbacks Coach Role
Nagy is renowned more for his work as a quarterbacks coach than an offensive playcaller. Yet, considering Callahan for the QB coach would add another smart offensive mind into the Giants facility.
For all his struggles in Nashville as the head coach, Callahan has had success in unheralded places. He was Matthew Stafford’s QBs coach with the Detroit Lions in 2016-17, and they went 9-7 both seasons, making the playoffs in 2016 and ranking seventh in the NFL in points per game in 2017.
He went to the then-Oakland Raiders for one year before catching on as offensive coordinator in Cincinnati under Zac Taylor in 2019. Callahan helped Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase and the Bengals finish top-10 in points per game twice, and Cincinnati reached the AFC Championship Game in back-to-back years.
Callahan is the son of former Raiders head coach Bill Callahan, who worked on staff with him in Tennessee as well. Brian Callahan has been coaching in the NFL since 2010, when he got his start as an offensive assistant with the Denver Broncos.
The Giants’ QB Coach Role is the Last for John Harbaugh to Fill
Of course, the Giants are going to cater their coaching staff around Dart’s needs, since the 2025 first-round pick is effectively the franchise’s linchpin at the moment.
After his promising 2025 campaign, which was also plagued with injury woes, Harbaugh took the role, in part, due to New York having its QB position figured out.
So you could forgive Harbaugh and Nagy for taking their time while filling this role, especially since it is the final hire for Harbaugh to make ahead of his first season as Giants head coach. Callahan has a lot of experience and positive factors going for him, but like Nagy he has never worked directly with Harbaugh.
If the Giants do not hire Callahan, or Arizona State quarterbacks guru Marcus Arroyo, Harbaugh and Nagy could also consider Tee Martin. Martin was Harbaugh’s QBs coach with the Baltimore Ravens the past three seasons under Harbaugh, helping Lamar Jackson achieve a pair of MVP awards — the 2023 and 2024 PFWA MVP and the 2023 AP MVP.
