It’s easy to see why McDaniel to Los Angeles made some waves.
The offensive coordinator’s track record and success runs long — No. 8 in the NFL in both passing offense and total offense over his four seasons in Miami, including a top ranked unit in 2023.
Not to mention his innovative offense that continues to evolve and add new wrinkles in every season.
“It’s exciting. Mike’s ideas never really stop,” NFL Network’s Brian Baldinger said. “There’s not playbook for his ideas, I think he’s really creative. He builds the offense around the talent like he did in Miami. It will change things.”
“You can easily talk yourself into them making the leap into a top five offense next year — quarterback, O-Line gets healthy,” The Ringer’s Sheil Kapadia added.
It’s very easy for pundits to be excited about the move and what the Chargers offense can look like.
“I think he’s one of the best offensive minds and offensive designers in the NFL,” Mays said. “Getting that, paired with Justin Herbert… you have Mike McDaniel, there’s a lot of justifiable excitement about what the Chargers offense could be.”
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler added: “He was the top guy on the market as far as OCs were concerned. Jim Harbaugh went and made it happen.”
McDaniel is seen as one of the best of the best around the league.
ESPN’s Ben Solak, who admitted he was ‘jacked up’ about the hire when it was announced, is one of them, as he sees him near the top when it comes to offensive minds.
Similar to what the offensive coordinator said in his opening press conference, Solak is intrigued about how the Chargers offense could look different compared to different iterations with different types of players.
One thing Solak knows for sure though, McDaniel will continue to find his advantages with the Bolts unit and personnel.
“Mike McDaniel is cutting edge stuff,” Solak said. “A lot of what we saw from McDaniel in Miami, and he spoke about it in his opening presser, was he had to build around Tua [Tagovailoa]… He hasn’t had something like this in a minute and you can tell Mike is really excited about that.
“The thing that Mike does the best is he leverages and creates space, creates windows for speed, opportunities for speed and getting the ball in space in a way that if there’s anyone better at it in the league, it’s only by a hair,” Solak added. “He’s the top of the top.”
