ChargersThe Los Angeles Chargers are in for a busy offseason. They’ve already replaced former defensive coordinator Jesse Minter with Chris O’Leary, while Mike McDaniel is in to take the reins of the offense, setting the stage for potential scheme changes on both sides of the ball.

The coaching staff has almost entirely taken shape, but free agency and the NFL Draft are rapidly approaching, meaning the Chargers will have to make a series of key roster decisions in the coming weeks.

Do they choose to retain Khalil Mack and Keenan Allen? Is adding some offensive line depth a sharp decision after last year’s woes up front? Does Omarion Hampton need a new running mate in the backfield?

Joe Hortiz and the front office clearly have their work cut out for them this spring. Before things start to get quite busy, let’s evaluate one potential free agency addition for the Chargers.

David Njoku to the Chargers: NFL Free Agency Idea

Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku is set to be among the more intriguing free-agent options at his position. Njoku is coming off a year impacted by injury, but he has a Pro Bowl nod under his belt and has proven that he can be an impactful pass catcher.

Njoku has personally confirmed that a reunion with the Browns is off the table, opening the door for any TE-needy teams to make him an offer.

With the veteran set to explore other options, fans and analysts have been thinking through logical landing spots.

Drake Bentley of The Sporting News believes the Chargers would make sense as a new home.

“The Los Angeles Chargers have Will Dissly and Orande Gadsden II. Gadsen had a better than average rookie campaign but struggled with drops. Depth at the position could be an option,” wrote Bentley.

Should The Chargers Sign David Njoku in Free Agency?

Njoku isn’t a talent who’s going to immediately change the outlook of the Chargers’ offense, but this would prove to be a worthwhile addition.

As Bentley notes, Los Angeles doesn’t have a particularly impactful pass-catching tight end. Gadsden flashed at times, but his production was inconsistent and a year two leap isn’t exactly guaranteed.

Beyond the state of the tight end room, the Chargers could stand to add another pass catcher. Keenan Allen is no longer under contract, and even if he returns, there’s a real chance that his production takes a serious step back in his age-34 season.

The need is clear, and there’s reason to believe that Njoku could be the answer. During his time in Cleveland, Njoku has played alongside a revolving door of quarterbacks but still managed to produce solid numbers.

He’s eclipsed 600 receiving yards in each of his last two healthy seasons, and with Joe Flacco under center in 2023, Njoku put together a six-game stretch in which he racked up 483 receiving yards and found the endzone four times.

With Justin Herbert as his quarterback, Njoku could rekindle some of that 2023 magic while serving as a strong complementary option behind Ladd McConkey and Quintin Johnston and helping the Chargers’ offense reach new heights.

David Njoku Stats

Njoku was banged up for a good portion of the 2025 season, and the Browns’ offense was a complete mess, so he didn’t post the most impressive stats in 2025.

2025 Stats:

12 games played
48 targets
33 receptions
293 receiving yards
8.9 yards per reception
4 receiving touchdowns

David Njoku Contract Projection

Given his age and recent production, Njoku isn’t going to command a monster deal in free agency. Spotrac currently projects him to receive a two-year, $20.0 million deal.
