Michigan State football made a splashy hire earlier this week, naming Al Netter as an assistant offensive line coach. Unfortunately, in one of the shortest coaching turnaround times you will see, he will not be heading to East Lansing, instead opting to go for an NFL job.

The New York Jets have hired Netter to be their assistant offensive line coach, serving under OL coach Steve Heiden, and more importantly, offensive coordinator Frank Reich, who served as Stanford’s head coach in 2025, where Netter worked.

Netter was the offensive line coach at Stanford from 2023 to 2025, and prior to that spent five seasons at Yale, where he served as offensive line coach, co-offensive coordinator, assistant head coach and run game coordinator.

Netter has a previous relationship with new Michigan State head coach Pat Fitzgerald because he played for him at Northwestern. He was on the Wildcats offensive line from 2008 to 2011, and played in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers and Tennessee Titans.
