Four Pittsburgh Steelers made Fox Sports’ list of Top 100 pending free agents when the new league year begins one month from now. The names that didn’t make it are perhaps most interesting.
Cornerback Asante Samuel Jr., safety Kyle Dugger, guard Isaac Seumalo, and quarterback Aaron Rodgers all made Greg Auman’s list. Left off were running back Kenneth Gainwell and cornerback James Pierre.
Samuel barely cracked the list at No. 95. Offseason back surgery and a lengthy rehab meant he wasn’t medically cleared until after the regular season began. Pittsburgh signed Samuel to the practice squad in November, and he worked his way into the lineup by December. In his first start, he recorded a key early interception against the Miami Dolphins in an eventual primetime win.
Samuel finished the year with 10 tackles and that interception across six games, his role reduced after James Pierre returned from a late-season injury. Still 26 years old until October, Samuel had a solid career in Los Angeles before his injury, and could be a shrewd buy-low candidate. If Pierre doesn’t re-sign, the Steelers could turn to Samuel.
Pittsburgh acquired Dugger in a midseason trade with the New England Patriots after SS DeShon Elliott suffered a season-ending knee injury. While Dugger provided a short-term band-aid of respectable play, his role is an average box safety without much range or many coverage plays. A highlight was his pick-six against Cleveland, but opponents exposed his game later in the season. It’s surprising he even made the Top 100, especially ahead of Gainwell and Pierre.
Seumalo is one of the top free agent linemen. He is coming off a strong season despite repeated injuries and a poor playoff performance. Seumalo will make for an interesting decision for the Steelers. Pittsburgh could re-sign him and keep the front five intact for a potential Aaron Rodgers return. They could also move on, given the hefty price tag he’ll command on the open market. Should he leave, Spencer Anderson could be in line to start. But a new coaching staff will add competition.
Seumalo is the fourth-best interior offensive lineman on the list.
Rodgers is the third-best quarterback on the list behind the Indianapolis Colts’ Daniel Jones and the Green Bay Packers’ Malik Willis. His market will likely be limited to just Pittsburgh and perhaps the Minnesota Vikings. But first, he’ll need to decide if he intends to play a 22nd NFL season. If so, he’d become just the eighth player in history and only the second who wasn’t a kicker at any point in his career; George Blanda played 26 years, entering as a quarterback but exiting as a specialist.
Gainwell’s and Pierre’s absences from Auman’s list raise an eyebrow. Gainwell had a career year, earning Pittsburgh’s MVP award for his versatility and pass-catching prowess. Pierre had a personal-best year himself, beginning the season as a special-teamer and ascending to be a quality man-coverage corner. Neither will turn 30 before free agency begins, increasing their market value.
Both should be ahead of Samuel and Dugger. So should other names on Auman’s list like former Steelers RB Najee Harris, who missed most of the year with a torn Achilles.
Auman’s top free agent this offseason is ex-Steelers and current Dallas Cowboys WR George Pickens. The Cowboys will likely slap Pickens with the franchise tag in an effort to work out a long-term deal. Daniel Jones, Jacksonville Jaguars LB Devin Lloyd, Cincinnati Bengals EDGE Trey Hendrickson, and Baltimore Ravens C Tyler Linderbaum follow Pickens on the list.
