The New York Jets could get creative this offseason to fill the void at QB1.
Luke Loffredo of The Saints Wire proposed a trade that would solve that problem.
New York Jets receive: veteran quarterback Derek Carr
New Orleans Saints receive: a 2026 fourth-round pick (No. 103 overall) and a 2026 sixth-round pick (No. 206 overall)
On Tuesday, February 10, the Jets officially announced that they had hired Bill Musgrave as the quarterbacks coach.
Musgrave worked directly with Carr on the then-Oakland Raiders for two seasons. That has sparked rumors that the two could reunite in New York.
Last offseason, Carr announced his retirement from the NFL. However, there has been some recent buzz that he could consider coming out of retirement for the right situation.
If he does come out of retirement, the Saint still holds his rights. So Carr would have to work something out with New Orleans and then with his new acquiring team, whoever that would be.
Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network said the trade price shouldn’t be “an unreasonable ask” considering Carr has “no future in New Orleans.”
Last year, the Saints drafted quarterback Tyler Shough, and he was a finalist for the Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
An Awkward Staring Contest
The Saints don’t want to keep Carr’s contract on the books, so if he unretires, they will have to move quickly.
However, they also don’t want to lose him for nothing.
The Jets, and many other teams, could be interested in Carr, which increases the demand for his services.
It’ll be a delicate balance and a somewhat awkward staring contest between the Saints and those other teams to try to find the right price.
The other teams want to pay the smallest possible price to acquire him. If they are too stingy, they could lose him to another team.
Something to watch.
Tons of Success Between Carr and His Old Coach Now on the Jets
For a two-season span, Bill Musgrave was Carr’s offensive cooridator with the Raiders.
In 2015, he set a career high with 32 touchdown passes, with 13 interceptions. He threw for 3,987 passing yards and completed 61.1% of his passes.
In 2016, he completed 63.8% of his passes, threw for 3,937 passing yards, and had a 28 touchdown to six interception ratio.
All in all across the two seasons, Carr had 60 touchdown passes to 19 picks, completed 62.4% of his passes, and threw for 7,924 passing yards.
Those are video game numbers that the Jets haven’t seen at quarterback in a long time, and some of those stats they haven’t ever seen.

“Something interesting re: new Jets QB coach Bill Musgrave: Musgrave was OC for Raiders in 2015 & 2016. During those 2 seasons, Carr made the pro bowl, had career highs in TD passes, & nearly won a MVP award. Worth thinking about with word of Carr’s potential return to NFL,” Scott Mason of Play Like A Jet Posted.

“Derek Carr under Musgrave as OC…honestly, if healthy, and that is a big if, he is a better and cheaper option than most other names we are hearing,” Paul Fiore posted on social media.
