Quinn Ewers is an option at quarterback for Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins have been linked to free agent quarterback Malik Willis ever since the Dolphins hired two former members of the Packers organization to run their team. First, Miami hired former Packers vice president of player personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan as their new general manager. Then, the team hired former Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley as their new head coach.

Both worked with Willis over the past two seasons. Sullivan was a member of the Packers front office when they traded for Willis. Meanwhile, Hafley went up against Willis in practice while Willis served as Green Bay’s scout team quarterback. Given the lack of available quarterbacks in the open market, Willis’ price may become elevated despite limited playing time in his career. Giving significant money to an unproven player carries risk.

The Dolphins lack options at quarterback. They could go with a bridge veteran like Kirk Cousins, but that also carries risk, as it could leave the team with an older quarterback who cannot carry the roster yet is not ineffective enough to secure a top draft pick. For that reason, Miami may opt to go with an internal option who has starting experience.

Quinn Ewers Could Be an Option for Miami Dolphins

Sports Illustrated’s Alain Poupart commented on the possibility of Ewers potentially being the team’s starting quarterback in 2026. He wrote, “It’s a stretch right now to suggest that Ewers is the long-term answer but he showed enough in his three starts to at least merit a look in training camp.”

In those three starts, the Dolphins went 1-2 as Ewers went 55-for-83 with 622 passing yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. Former head coach Mike McDaniel was open to the idea of maintaining Ewers as the quarterback. When he was asked about the possibility of Ewers being the quarterback next season, he said, “I wouldn’t close the door on that.”

However, even when McDaniel was at the helm, NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe reported that the Dolphins planned to bring in competition for Ewers. New head coach Jeff Hafley also revealed that he is planning on having a competition in the quarterback position.

Offensive Coordinator’s Thoughts on Ewers

While the Dolphins do have a new offensive staff, they will also keep some familiar pieces, particularly in their offensive staff. Bobby Slowik, who was the team’s senior pass-game coordinator in 2025, was promoted to offensive coordinator under Hafley.

When asked about Ewers, Slowik said, “The fun thing about Quinn when we were with him last year is just how much he was able to grow. I think everybody just saw that in the last few games he played at the end of the year. He grew every game. You could see him get better and take steps every game. He’s got to continue to do that in the offseason program and I’m excited to get him back. He’s fun to work with and see what happens and see where it goes.”

While Slowik also revealed that he believed Tua Tagovailoa could bounce back, it seems the door is closed on a Tagovailoa return in 2026.
