The state’s all-time winningest coach has ended his time as head coach of the Boyd-Buchanan Buccaneers.

The school announced on Wednesday that Gary Rankin has resigned as head football coach after four seasons. Rankin led the Bucs to a 43-7 record in his four seasons at the helm. Including a trip to the Division-II Class AA BlueCross Bowl in 2023. The team bowed out in the state semifinals the last two years by losing to the eventual state champion.

Rankin’s legacy speaks for itself. He’s Tennessee’s all-time leader in wins for a prep football coach. He reached the 500-win plateau with Boyd-Buchanan’s first victory of the 2025 season.

Rankin also makes it clear that he’s not retiring. At 72-years old, he still has a drive to continue coaching.

Boyd-Buchanan’s search for a new head football coach is already underway.Â
