There hasn’t been a lot of turnover for the Oklahoma Sooners this offseason but they haven’t fully avoided the assistant coach carousel. Jay Valai left for the NFL and the Buffalo Bills. Oklahoma hired Jason Witten to replace Joe Jone Finley. Now it’s DeMarco Murray finding a new home with the Kansas City Chiefs, according to reports.

Murray, a former Sooners and Dallas Cowboys running back, spent the last six seasons coaching running backs at the University of Oklahoma. Despite early success with Rhamondre Stevenson, Kennedy Brooks, and Eric Gray, the Sooners struggled to find consistency amid injuries at the running back position from 2023 to 2025.

Still, he recruited at a high level for the Sooners, bringing in high-level prospects Gavin Sawchuk, Jovantae Barnes, Tory Blaylock, Hollywood Smothers (before he left for North Carolina State, his first spring in Norman), Taylor Tatum, Xavier Robinson, and Jonathan Hatton.

Murray led the NFL in rushing in 2014 with the Dallas Cowboys and had a stellar career that included stops with the Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans. Now, he joins Andy Reid’s staff in Kansas City, hoping to get the Chiefs back to the playoffs in 2026.
