A video surfaced Wednesday on ESPN Cleveland showing Deshaun Watson starting his offseason training. The polarizing veteran was moving smoothly as he attempts to comeback from two Achilles surgeries and a season-long absence. It’s the latest chapter in his disastrous Cleveland tenure.

But as Watson rehabs, a new question is looming…which quarterback gives the Browns the best chance to win in 2026? The recovering Watson or fan favorite Shedeur Sanders who led Cleveland to three wins over seven starts as a rookie?

Shedeur Sanders

Pros:

• Already gained valuable NFL experience through challenging circumstances. As a 5th-round pick, Sanders was stuck at the bottom of the depth chart in training camp. Despite never practicing with the starters, No. 12 showed flashes of excellence in live action, earning an alternate Pro Bowl accolade.

• Momentum and upside. He’s young, improving, and clearly excited about working with new head coach Todd Monken, who openly welcomed him and joked about previously wanting to draft him when he coached in Baltimore.

• Early chemistry with the offense and a growing comfort under pressure.

Cons:

• Still inexperienced. Sanders’ limited starts came with growing pains, like his 7-TDs to 10-INTs stat line.

• Needs to earn the job in camp through consistency and growth to prove that Monken can trust him.

Deshaun Watson

Pros:

• Proven elite talent when healthy. Multiple Pro Bowl seasons earlier in his career, and has teased Browns fans with the odd burst of excellence on the field.

• Veteran presence who can mentor a young room.

Cons:

• Has played in only seven games over the past two seasons (Achilles surgeries), and prior to that missed time due to suspensions and other injuries.

• Durability questions linger, but also if Watson can ever shake off the “rust” and play at a high level again.

The Decision

The superstar Watson of 2020 is long gone. His health, availability, and on-field performance all remain uncertain. Sanders brings energy, growth, and a fresh connection with Monken that the Browns can build around.

For 2026, my prediction is that Sanders edges out Watson for the starting job. A result that will give Cleveland a chance to truly find out if he’s the QB of the future.
