The Miami Dolphins have no shortage of question marks on both sides of the ball as the team heads into a transition year and rebuild.
Miami has a new head coach in Jeff Hafley and there’s a good chance we could see multiple veterans get shown the door, including quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and wideout Tyreek Hill.
For our purposes here, our focus is on Hill, who is a cut candidate. While that’s the right move for Miami to make, it would leave them short-handed at wide receiver with Jaylen Waddle and not much else behind him.
That’s why Pro Football Focus’ Mason Cameron believes the Dolphins are the best landing spot for Washington Commanders wide receiver and pending free agent, Deebo Samuel.
Here’s Cameron’s thoughts:
As PFF lead fantasy analyst Nathan Jahnke highlighted in his look at fantasy football’s ideal free agent landing spots, the Dolphins are likely to release Tyreek Hill this offseason to free up cap space (currently projected at $16.4 million over the cap) and could look to fill the void with Deebo Samuel. The move would reunite newly elevated offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik with Samuel, whom he had a hand in coaching during their time together in San Francisco.
Slowik helped orchestrate Samuel’s All-Pro campaign in 2021, in which he earned the third-highest PFF overall grade (90.2) among receivers. Despite some citing age as a concern as Samuel enters his age-30 season, the veteran still profiles as a strong option to find holes in coverage and exploit them for chunks of yardage after the catch. Last season, Samuel ranked in the 92nd percentile among qualifying receivers in yards after catch per attempt, with his 6.5 mark ranking seventh among 83 qualifiers.Â
Samuel was traded to the Washington Commanders last offseason and while many had him pegged for a decline, the veteran, whose best season came in 2021 when he posted 1,405 receiving yards and six touchdowns en route to a Pro Bowl nod, showed he’s still got some gas left in the tank.Â
Samuel tallied 72 catches for 727 yards and five scores in Washington, numbers that are made more impressive when you consider Jayden Daniel missed 10 contests due to injury.
There’s a chance the Commanders want to hold on to Samuel, as the team doesn’t have much else at wide receiver outside of Terry McLaurin, but with getting “younger and faster” a big goal for general manager Adam Peters, it’s very conceivable that Washington will move on from the 30-year-old.
Samuel would offer a solid No. 2 option in Miami, where he would operate behind Waddle. From there, Miami can draft and develop a young wide receiver to be Samuel’s heir apparent.
Spotrac projects Samuel will land a two-year, $31.5 million contract in free agency.
Considering their need at wide receiver, we don’t mind the Dolphins signing him at that price, but they shouldn’t make more than a one-year commitment. We could also see Miami turn around and flip Samuel at the trade deadline for a pick.
