The new development in Bridgeland in northwest Harris County is expected to include an entertainment district.

HOUSTON — It’s been a fixture across the street from NRG Stadium for more than two decades, but the Houston Texans’ practice facility could soon be on the move.

During the Harris County Commissioners Court on Thursday, Commissioner Lesley Briones said the training facility and team headquarters would be moving to the Bridgeland community in Cypress.

“Their future practice facility and headquarters will be in northwest Harris County,” Briones said.

We first told you last that Texans owner Cal McNair was exploring the possibility of moving the practice facility somewhere away from the stadium to go along with an entertainment complex.

Houston is one of only a handful of NFL teams without a separate practice facility.

“It’s a complicated kind of a mixture, but with the practice facility, we’re working on that almost every day,” McNair said to us in May of last year. “What’s great is we’re OK where we are, and so that’s our starting point, and then, would we move out? Yeah, we would move out and do a brand new one somewhere.”

Briones said the northwest region of Harris County is expected to grow substantially in the coming years. She said the move to Bridgeland is expected to generate billions of dollars in economic development in the next three decades.

“There will be a prioritization for local jobs. This (relocation), specifically, 60,000 jobs will be created in the next decade, and 17,000 jobs specifically to this Toro District,” Briones said.

Briones and Commissioner Tom Ramsay are expected to hold a news conference on Thursday at 1 p.m. We will stream the update.

This is a developing story. We’ll post updates as we get them.
