The Miami Dolphins are predicted to add a free agent quarterback

The Miami Dolphins are once again in the quarterback market. Currently, Tua Tagovailoa remains a member of the Dolphins, but the expectation is that will not be the case for long, as the team is expected to trade or release him.

Regarding the quarterback position, new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan said, “Quarterback is the most important position in professional sports. I also think it’s the most dependent. These guys heard me say this in the interview process. We will evaluate that position like we evaluate every other position and we will do what is best for this football team. With Tua or anybody else, to sit up here today and tell you that I have a great understanding of what we’re going to do or which way we’re going to go, that would be a lie because there’s just too much work to do.”

He added that the quarterback may also be someone who’s not in the building, which has led to predictions that he could add one of the top available quarterbacks on the open market.

Miami Dolphins Predicted to Add Malik Willis

Fox Sports’ Greg Auman released a list of the 100 best free agents this season, and projected landing spots. Free agent quarterback Malik Willis was ranked as the ninth-best available player and the second best quarterback. The only quarterback ranked ahead of him is Daniel Jones, who played well in Indianapolis before tearing his Achilles, although he is widely expected to return to the Colts in 2026.

Auman listed the Dolphins as the potential landing spot for Willis. He wrote, “Willis, 26, may be the hardest free agent to ballpark in terms of how much money he’ll get. There’s an absolute lack of quality quarterbacks available, combined with a weak QB draft class, so teams without an obvious starter may overpay here. Willis has only six career starts, but his work in Green Bay has been promising — six touchdowns, zero interceptions over the last two years, with a 79% completion percentage. Could he be a match for former Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, seeking a reasonably priced answer he can build around in Miami? You’ll see him projected for a Justin Fields-type deal, like two years and $40 million.”

Auman is not the first to make the comparison to Justin Fields. A general manager who spoke with Jason La Canfora suggested that Willis would get a similar contract, although he added that he believed Willis to be the better player.

Malik Willis Player Profile

The risk with Willis comes from his lack of playing time. He’s thrown only 155 passes over the past four seasons; however, the upside is there. ESPN analyst Mina Kimes said of Willis, “He’s obviously got a cannon. He’s an incredible dual-threat quarterback. I think he’s best with a run game, which he will add to that so that he can get one-on-one’s on the outside.”

With the Dolphins, he’d be joining De’Von Achane, who had 1,350 rushing yards in 2025. Willis’ dual-threat ability would give the offense an added element in the run game that it did not have with Tagovailoa.

Willis has run for 40 or more yards in each of his last three starts, scoring three rushing touchdowns during that span. Tagovailoa has never run for 40 yards or more in a game.
