If Aaron Rodgers leaves, the Pittsburgh Steelers could potentially pivot by luring another accomplished quarterback out of retirement.

Injuries prompted Derek Carr to retire after the 2024 season, but the 34-year-old could reportedly consider a comeback. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo said teams have “conducted due diligence” on Carr, who may play again if the right opportunity arises.

NFL.com’s Nick Shook suggested the Steelers as such a situation when listing the top possible landing spots for Carr. Shook also mentioned the Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings and New York Jets.

Acquiring Carr would continue a recent trend for the Steelers, who signed Russell Wilson in 2024 and Rodgers last year.

“The Steelers have made a habit of enlisting mercenary veterans to fill their void under center over the last two seasons and will likely be in the market for another in 2026,” Shook wrote. “Pittsburgh lacks a young candidate at the position and maintains an expectation to contend immediately after Aaron Rodgers helped them win the AFC North in 2025, making for a natural fit for Carr — unless, of course, Rodgers returns for a second season.”

Shook suggested that Carr could last longer in Pittsburgh than Wilson or Rodgers, if the 42-year-old doesn’t come back.

“There are questions to answer, though, starting with how Carr might align with new head coach Mike McCarthy,” Shook wrote. “On paper, the rest of the situation should entice Carr, including the presence of DK Metcalf and the possibility that Carr could make it a multi-season home if things go well.”

A healthy Carr is more enticing than any free-agent quarterback alternative to Rodgers. The five-time Pro Bowler posted a 101.0 quarterback rating in his last season with the New Orleans Saints, who still hold his contractual rights.

That said, Carr probably wouldn’t be Pittsburgh’s first choice. The Steelers are reportedly interested in Rodgers returning to reunite with McCarthy.
