The Buffalo Bills quietly kicked off their player personnel and salary cap action this week, as several players’ contract guarantees kicked in for the 2026 NFL season.
The team also has until this upcoming Monday, the 16th, to make re-signing decisions on any of the players on their roster who have void years remaining on their current contracts, as far as whether to use those years in new contracts. Those players are: Matt Milano (11M), Joey Bosa (7.2M), Connor McGovern (4.8M), AJ Epenesa (2.9M), and DaQuan Jones (3.7M).

Due to cap hit and the need to free up money, the front office and coaching staff may also soon examine what to do or rework in the contracts like those of Curtis Samuel, Dawson Knox, Ty Johnson, Taron Johnson, and Tyler Bass.
In the meantime, per the NFL transaction wire, Buffalo also made their first signings of the offseason, inking QB Shane Buechele and WR Jalen Virgil on free agent contracts. As neither player was currently under contract to any other team, they were free to sign with any club before the March 11 league year begins.
With a new coaching staff and coordinators in all three phases, there may be some additional personnel changes on defense as well, with new DC Jim Leonard’s 3-4 concepts, in particular. This is another area the team may look at.
Some other important dates coming up this offseason will include the February 17th-March 3rd window to use franchise tags, the February 23rd-March 2nd NFL Combine, the March 9th-11th beginning of the “legal tampering” window in free agency, the March 11th 4 PM beginning of free agency, and the April 23rd-25th NFL Draft.

GM and President of Football Operations Brandon Beane and company will get to work on improving and strengthening the roster, which may also include more focus on doing so via trade(s) and the Draft, as the free agent market is notably a shallower talent pool this year.
