Demario Davis hasn’t gone full David Njoku, but he has made it clear returning to the New Orleans Saints isn’t a foregone conclusion. Davis was noncommittal to where he’d play football next year in a recent conversation with Kay Adams.
Fox Sports’ Greg Auman doesn’t just think Davis will test free agency. He believes the Saints captain will leave New Orleans for the Chicago Bears. Auman recently laid out the top 100 free agents and predicted their landing spot. In his projection, the Saints were able to retain Cam Jordan but lost Davis in the process.
When thinking about Davis landing in Chicago, the instant connection is Dennis Allen. That may be the start of why it’s logical for Davis to join the Bears, but that’s from where it ends. Davis told the world what he was looking for, and it sounds a lot like the Bears.Â
The Bears check all the boxes to steal Demario Davis away from the SaintsÂ
Davis is a great player who could be a valuable asset anywhere. He believes his greatest value is as a leader. With that being said, he thinks he could bring that trait to a playoff team. The Saints are hoping to be a playoff team. The Bears were a game away from the NFC Championship Game.Â
When watching the playoffs, Davis saw teams who needed a general and needed a veteran to help their younger players take the next step. Check and check. Demario Davis is the perfect person for both of those tasks.Â
It’s not hard to see how Davis would look at the Bears and think he could help take them over the top. The Bears are on the upswing. At this point in his career, no one is blaming Davis to wanting to go somewhere that is closer to a championship.Â
Allen being the defensive coordinator doesn’t hurt the allure either. Davis played his first 7 years in New Orleans under Allen as the defensive coordinator or head coach. Five of those seven years ended with Davis making an All-Pro team.Â
Davis would step into a system he already knows with a coordinator knows how to maximize the linebacker’s strengths. That equates to practically no acclimation period on the field. Whether it’s the opportunity to lead or defensive philosophy, the Bears check the boxes to pull Davis in if he decides to leave the Saints.Â
