Mike Macdonald has admitted the Seattle Seahawks’ dominant defense has a formation problem.
The Seattle Seahawks just wrapped up their Super Bowl parade, and now it’s time for the team to turn its attention to the next season.
The Seahawks announced a series of reserve/futures signings, adding players to the 90-man roster that will carry the team through offseason practices and training camp. The list includes a promising safety who could be on the way to play a bigger role in 2026.
Seahawks Looking to the Future of Their Secondary
The Seahawks were the last team in the NFL to make their futures signings, which come only after a team has finished its season. The Seahawks filled out several positions on both sides of the ball, including safety Maxen Hook.
Michael Hanich of SI.com suggested that Hook could be the next Jake Bobo, the undrafted free agent receiver who worked his way from the fringes of the roster to play a critical role on offense. Hanich believes that Hook could do the same for the defense.
“Of all the players that have the closest characteristics to Bobo is Maxen Hook, a former undrafted player from a non-power five college. Hook is a former first-team All-MAC player and a third-team All-MAC player in his freshman season,” Hanich wrote.
Hanich suggested that Hook could be a low-cost option for a team that won’t be able to afford keeping all the most important pieces of their secondary.
“The Seahawks have some tough decisions to make regarding safeties hitting free agency, like Coby Bryant and Ty Okada,” Hanich wrote. “It could be 50/50 for the Seahawks to potentially sign Bryant to a big contract. Okada, another former undrafted safety, could be an easy player for the Seahawks.
“Hook is a player who could see his role rise due to some of the players who might leave the team. He could also be the next Okada and find his way on the field.”
Seahawks Could Keep Major Pieces of Secondary Intact
Some analysts believe the Seahawks will do all they can to keep the core of the Super Bowl-winning defense intact. Greg Auman of Fox Sports believes that could start with re-signing cornerback Josh Jobe, who helped shut down the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl — and frustrated wide receiver Stefon Diggs with a late hit.
“Jobe, 27, was cut by the Eagles before the 2024 season, landed on Seattle’s practice squad and has quickly ascended to an every-game starter in a talented secondary,” Auman wrote. “He re-signed this season for $2 million, but will be closer to $10 million on his next deal as other teams seek to crib from the NFL’s No. 1 scoring defense. Two Super Bowls in four seasons doesn’t hurt. Seattle has difficult decisions ahead in their secondary in free agency.”
Auman also suggested the Seahawks could hold onto one of their biggest trade-dealine additions, receiver and return specialist Rashid Shaheed. He had a major impact on both phases of the game since joining the team, adding a home run threat to the offense and often giving them favorable field position with his return skills.
