Without question, it was an impressive first season for Liam Coen as the Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coach.

After the Jaguars won just four games in 2024, this team logged 13 wins this past year and also won the AFC South.

So, looking ahead to Year 2 under Coen and GM James Gladstone, where can this Jaguars team improve? Coen recently discussed that question in an interview with Pete Prisco of CBS Sports.

“I think specifically on offense, being able to be balanced throughout the entire season,” Coen said. “I think that, beginning of the season, our run game really kind of helped us win a lot of those football games. As the season went, our pass game really kind of took on.

“And to be in this game on Sunday (the Super Bowl), you need both. You need them both, and you need to fire on all cylinders in the playoffs. You got to play your best football in the playoffs and we didn’t happen to play our best football against the Bills.”

Even as the Jaguars won their final eight regular-season games, which included the offense putting up nearly 33 points per game, the rushing attack struggled to get going.

As Coen said, the run game boosted the offense early in the season, but down the stretch, it struggled to get going.

Overall, the Jaguars ranked 27th in yards per rush. From Week 10 on, there were five games where Etienne failed to rush for over 60 yards.

If the Jaguars can pair Trevor Lawrence and the passing game’s high-level play with a strong run game, this offense will become even more difficult to defend. Defenses essentially have to pick their poison at that point — what element are they going to try to stop?

As far as the Jaguars’ defense goes, Coen mentioned two areas where they can get better.

“So, and then defensively, we’ve got to continue to limit the explosives in the air in the pass game on third down especailly,” Coen added, “and continue to find ways to affect and impact the quarterback in the pass rush. So those are some areas we’re looking to improve.”

Addressing the pass rush, especially along the interior, will have to be a top priority for Gladstone this offseason. Depth behind Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker is needed, and more juice from the defensive tackle position is a must.

The name of the game for every defense is affecting the quarterback, and when that happens, every other defender on the field benefits from it.
