Oregon State is adding a former defensive coordinator from the ACC and Big Ten.
Former Louisville and Purdue defensive coordinator Mark Hagen is joining the Beavers as defensive line coach.
“Coach Hagen has been an elite coach on the defensive line from the moment that he stepped on the field as a coach,” Oregon State coach JaMarcus Shephard said in a statement. “He brings a wealth of experience from various institutions and conferences across college football to Corvallis and can develop at a high level regardless of where the team sat in the conference. We welcome Coach Hagen as a former coordinator and elite defensive line coach.”
Hagen served as Louisville’s co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach for the past three years, with prior stops at Purdue, Texas, Indiana, Texas A&M and Northern Illinois. The Cardinals ranked 16th in total defense, 23rd in run defense, 24th in pass defense and 38th in scoring last season.
“I’m honored and thankful to be a part of JaMarcus Shephard’s initial staff at Oregon State University,” Hagen said in a statement. “Oregon State has a proud football history, and I’m excited to get started in Corvallis.”
At UL he coached second team All-American defensive lineman Ashton Gillotte, a third round pick of Kansas City in the 2025 NFL draft. While at Purdue, Hagen coached All-American edge rusher George Karlaftis.
Hagen coached the defensive line at Texas in 2020, prior to which he served in the same capacity for four seasons at Indiana (2015-18). He spent three seasons at Texas A&M, prior to which he was in Bloomington (2011-12).
