CLEVELAND, Ohio (TheOBR.com) – Good morning, Cleveland Browns fans!
THE DAILY BLOVIATION
My dog is oblivious. It’s fairly late for me to get up, but she’s still tired and is curled up like a bagel in her little bed. She snoozes her way through the morning, totally oblivious to the changes in the world around her, save for the occasional squirrel or dog that makes the mistake of encroaching on her territory.
I myself, though, am acutely aware of changes rippling through the world and how they impact my adult life work here at the OBR. I woke up this morning to a story about the likely doom of a large number of publishers – especially those who rely on Google search traffic (which is not us).
The story, written by the CEO of Newsweek, argues that AI tools are good at aggregating information but cannot exercise editorial judgment to separate fact from everything else.
“AI can synthesize what exists,” he said. “Journalism exists to establish what is true.”
That’s why we’ve been doubling down on facts and unique analysis rather than joining the crowd of sites throwing out a dozen or more stories a day with obscure or misleading headlines. Those tricks won’t work in an era where Google search becomes less and less relevant to the average user.
We believe that the OBR’s focus on trust and personal interaction will allow us to survive (and even thrive) in this new age. Bring it on, AI. We’re ready for you.
Part of what we’re doing is trying to take our video journalism to the next level by offering a ton of worthwhile news and analysis in a short period of time. Our demonstration of this new type of sports video work is called “This Side Up”, a short (under 30 minutes) pre-produced video that covers the last week in Cleveland Browns news. You can see the second episode, which debuted last night, by clicking right here.
Everyone is doing streamed video calls these days – we call them “robots in boxes”, and they have their place. We’ll continue doing them on Monday through Wednesday, but we’re trying to come up with something new. Please give it a try and let us know what you think.
IN THE NEWS
— Take a moment to salute soon-to-be ex-Brown David Njoku, who compiled over 4,000 yards as a Cleveland Brown, along with 34 touchdowns. This tweet has some highlights. This clip from a Cavs pre-game show shows his love for Cleveland and his energy.
— More renderings of the massive Home Depot that’s going to help gobble up 176 acres of land in Brookpark. IT needs more and bigger screens than that.
— Personally, I don’t do this deal with the Cowboys to grab three picks from #12 to #24 for the offensive line and wide receivers. You want Caleb Downs? Best got set to pony up more than that.
— The Browns have officially asked for permission to interview passing game coordinator Cory Undlin for their defensive coordinator job. This has been expected for a while.
— Yes, the Browns’ entire offensive line is old and ready to leave or retire, but seeing it on Ourlads’ depth chart really brings it home.
— Finally, an NFL team list where the Browns aren’t on the bottom. PFF puts the Browns in the middle of the pack among teams that have a chance to go from worst to first in their division. Probably says more about the AFC North than it does about the Browns.
— Ex-Browns WR (and Super Bowl ring owner) Frisman Jackson is up for offensive coordinator at the Raiders, where he would learn under Klint Kubiak.
— Trinidad Chambliss gets yet another year to raise his draft stock. College football is leading all sports in lawsuits these days.
Have a good one! GO BROWNS!
