How the San Francisco 49ers ultimately move on from Brandon Aiyuk remains unclear. If the team believes it can receive value in return for the disgruntled wide receiver, a trade would be the logical path. However, with Aiyuk unwilling to continue playing for the 49ers, a release cannot be ruled out.
After signing a lucrative contract extension ahead of the 2024 season, Aiyuk suffered a torn ACL just seven games into the year. He was initially expected to return in 2025, and the organization anticipated his comeback. As the season progressed, though, that return appeared increasingly unlikely.
The situation escalated when reports surfaced that Aiyuk had cut off communication with the team. As for the reason, even general manager John Lynch was in the dark.
“It’s unfortunate—a situation that just went awry,” Lynch said.
If the 49ers release Aiyuk, CBS Sports writer Jordan Dajani believes the Los Angeles Chargers could emerge as a logical landing spot.
“The Los Angeles Chargers are undergoing a change in offensive philosophy in swapping Greg Roman for Mike McDaniel at coordinator,” Dajani wrote. “It’s clear that the Chargers need to upgrade the depth on the offensive line, but they could be in the market for a new weapon, too.”
A change of scenery could provide Aiyuk with added motivation to prove he can still be an elite NFL receiver.
“Back in 2023, Aiyuk caught 75 passes for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns as the 49ers made it all the way to Super Bowl LVIII,” Dajani added. “He had seven 100-yard games, and averaged 3.1 yards per route run — the third-best rate in the NFL behind Tyreek Hill and Nico Collins (min. 400 routes).
“Aiyuk caught 14 of 20 passes thrown both outside the numbers and with 15 or more air yards, which was the best rate (70%) of any player in the last four seasons. In L.A., Aiyuk finds an offense ready to take off.”
