The Miami Dolphins announced they had hired a quarterbacks coach

The Miami Dolphins are searching for their next franchise quarterback, as reports suggest the team is planning on moving on from Tua Tagovailoa. The team made the decision to move away from Tagovailoa after they benched him during the season following a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 15.

Additionally, the team changed its coaching staff as they fired Mike McDaniel after four seasons. McDaniel ended up taking a job as the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers, where he wound up taking some of his former Dolphins’ offensive staff. One person who did not follow Mike McDaniel was Miami’s senior pass-game coordinator, who stayed in Miami and was promoted to offensive coordinator under new head coach Jeff Hafley.

The team nearly completed filling out its coaching staff, and they landed on former Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett as their quarterbacks coach. However, he quickly departed as he landed an offensive coordinator job with the Arizona Cardinals. That left the Dolphins with a vacancy in the quarterback room. Now, that vacancy has been filled.

Dolphins Announce Quarterbacks Coach

The Miami Dolphins announced they are hiring Bush Hamdan as their quarterbacks coach. He has spent the majority of his coaching career at the college football level, although he did serve as the Falcons’ quarterbacks coach in 2017. He joined the Falcons the year after Kyle Shanahan left Atlanta, but Hamdan is familiar with that offensive scheme, which the Dolphins will run under Bobby Slowik.

In 2023, he said to The Idaho Statesman, “The first thing that comes to mind is whether it’s a run or pass, you’re trying to make everything look the same. Every time there’s a midzone play being run, there’s a (QB) keeper off of that and a play-action pass off of that.” Those are crucial elements of the West Coast offense Miami runs.

Hamdan was not the Dolphins’ first choice for the job, as that was the previously mentioned Hackett. He might not have been their second choice either as the team tried to interview Detroit Lions assistant Bruce Gradkwoski for the role, but saw their request denied.

Dolphins Quarterback Outlook

Ultimately, the biggest decision regarding the quarterback room has yet to be made. The Dolphins’ general manager revealed that he has not made a decision on whether Tua Tagovailoa will be a member of the Dolphins.

He said regarding a conversation he had with Tagovailoa, “Tua was in my office the other day, if I’m being perfectly frank. We had a great conversation. Tua has been a very good player in this league, he’s done a lot of really good things for the Miami Dolphins. You guys (Dolphins fans) should be proud to have him and have had him. I don’t know what the future holds right now, and I told Tua that.”

Miami’s general manager did add that he was planning on bringing in competition for the quarterback room, although he did not say whether that would be via the draft or free agency. It remains to be seen which quarterback new coach Bush Hamdan will work with.
