The Los Angeles Chargers requested an interview with a member of the Patriots coaching staff

New England Patriots quarterbacks coach Ashton Grant will be staying with the organization. This was reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Friday afternoon.

Grant was originally scheduled to interview with the Las Vegas Raiders for their head coach position. However, he ultimately decided to stick with the Patriots and continue his work with quarterback Drake Maye.

Grant’s Coaching Journey Prior To Patriots

Grant began his coaching career in Massachusetts, serving as a quality control coach with the College of Holy Cross football staff. He was able to get his foot in the door before transitioning to the NFL.

Grant first worked in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns, beginning his tenure with the organization in 2020. He served as an offensive quality control coach in 2022, and an offensive assistant and quarterbacks coach in 2023-2024. While there, he overlapped with Mike Vrabel, as the latter was a coaching and personal consultant for the Browns, Grant followed Vrabel to the Patriots in 2025. Vrabel hired Grant to be the quarterback’s coach. The coach was instrumental in leading Maye to success this year, as the latter threw for 4,391 passing yards, 31 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

The continuity will be important, and Grant is staying in the fold, per Schefter.

Patriots QB coach Ashton Grant has decided to remain in New England rather than discuss the vacant offensive coordinator job with the Las Vegas Raiders. Grant now officially will be staying in New England to continue helping with the development of Drake Maye.

New England Patriots Learning From Prior Mistakes

This is an important move for the Patriots’ offense. The Patriots originally tried to find their quarterback in the post-Tom Brady era with Mac Jones. Jones had his best season under Josh McDaniels in 2021. He played at a high level, recording 3,801 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. McDaniels was the quarterbacks coach as well as the offensive coordinator.

McDaniels left for the Las Vegas Raiders head coach position in 2022. Joe Judge was tasked with filling the role of quarterbacks coach for the Patriots. The quarterback was never able to replicate that same amount of success, as he threw for 2,997 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions Patriots inconsistency at the coaching positions led to stunted development for Jones.

Jones was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars on March 14, 2024, in exchange for a 2024 draft pick. He has since found more success elsewhere, landing with the San Francisco 49ers this past season. He threw for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns, and six interceptions while Brock Purdy was out with an injury. Jones was able to rebound after what was a difficult couple of years in New England.

New England Patriots Have Coaching Stabiity

It appears that the Patriots are not making the same mistake twice. They are building a solid coaching staff around Maye. Retaining Grantt is an integral part of this. The Patriots are in a unique position to help develop their franchise quarterback. They can not only develop them, but also keep the same coaching staff around him.

The Patriots may have to deal with further inquiries like this in the coming seasons. The success of the Patriots this year undoubtedly has led to intrigued teams across the league. For now, the Patriots can keep their core group together as they look to build off what was a successful yet unexpected 2025 season.
