Red Murdock says “overlooked” fellow UB linebackers Joe Andreessen and Shaun Dolac, who are now in the NFL, paved the way for him to get an invite to the combine.
AMHERST, NY — Red Murdock has never been to Indianapolis.
That is set to change in a couple of weeks at the NFL Scouting Combine.

“In the back of my head, it’s always been how can I get to the NFL, is what I’m doing going to get me to the NFL,” Murdock said.
The former UB All-American linebacker, and NCAA career leader in forced fumbles, is one of 319 players invited to this year’s combine in late February.
“Good things happen to good people,” UB coach Pete Lembo. “He’s had such a wonderful career. He stuck here and stayed with us. He made the most of this opportunity and so nice to see him getting all of the postseason recognition, but this is really the cherry on top of the ice cream sundae to get invited to the combine.”
Finishing second in the nation in tackles each of the last two years, the linebacker figured he would get an invite the combine.
However, with teammates at the same position in Joe Andreessen and Shaun Dolac who are currently in the NFL — but did not get invited each the past two years, respectively — Murdock knew the trip to Indy wasn’t a given.
“It was more like confirming what I already believed, but also, Buffalo has a history of being overlooked regardless of what we put out on tape,” Murdock said. “It was definitely a little sigh of relief.”
“I feel like they also paved the way for me in many ways, and I feel like it’s very evident. Everybody knows those guys were more than talented enough to be out there and showcase.”
Murdock is the first Bull to get a combine invite since 2021. He’s not worried about impressing teams, saying he’s going to be himself and let the rest take care of itself, but he is proud to represent the university with which he spent the last four years.
“I really think that’s what makes it special for me,” Murdock said. “Anybody that knows me knows that Buffalo is very special to me and Buffalo gave me a chance when not too many other people wanted to.”
Now at the combine, Murdock is hoping it’s the next step in finding the next team to give him a chance, this time at the NFL Draft in the spring.
“It’s a lifetime goal,” Murdock said of making the NFL. “I’ve been dreaming about this for a long time, as long as I can remember.”
