PORTAGE, Ind. (WNDU) – The city of Portage unveiled plans this week for a $5 billion project called “Halas Harbor” designed to attract the Chicago Bears to Northwest Indiana.
The proposed development would be located 40 miles from Soldier Field and would be privately financed with zero taxpayer burden or debt on the team, according to city officials.
Mayor Austin Bonta said the city has 300 acres of land ready for the Bears.
“This is as real as any other proposed Indiana sites for the Bears,” Bonta said. “I can also tell you that there are already increasing interest for the site now which we respectfully are listening to but ultimately our aim has been and continues to be first and foremost attracting the Bears right here to Halas Harbor.”
The mayor said Halas Harbor would be more than just a football stadium, but an entertainment venue year-round. The city has released renderings of the proposed development.
