The Kansas City Chiefs are one of those franchises that could fool you during trivia night at your local bar. The organization is based in Kansas City, Missouri, which is confusing enough that many casual fans assume the team is based in the Sunflower State.
But now, the Chiefs will soon be playing their games across the border from Kansas City, where they’ve long played, as they recently signed a deal to leave Arrowhead Stadium and play in a yet-to-be-constructed stadium in Kansas City, Kansas, with the first season in the new venue set for 2031.
And while everyone awaits an update from the franchise’s star tight end, Travis Kelce, on whether he will retire this offseason, the latest viral quote from Kelce focused on the organization’s upcoming move. Unsurprisingly, it’s a mixed bag of emotions for the veteran tight end.
“We’re dealing with it right now in Kansas City, we’re going over to Kansas,” Kelce said. “If you look at that deal in terms of an owner, it’s one of the greatest opportunities you could ever get as an owner. I think it’s going to be unbelievable once it’s finally set in stone. But it is going to be kind of heartbreaking knowing the Chiefs are going to move away from Arrowhead and the Missouri side of KC.”
It’s understandable why Kelce would feel some sadness over the move. Kelce has been with the Chiefs for his entire 13-year NFL career, and the franchise has been based on the Missouri side of Kansas City throughout that time. Kelce has played a crucial role in leading the Chiefs to prominence, with three Super Bowl victories that have meant a lot to the city. Arrowhead Stadium is where he established his reputation as one of the greatest tight ends of all time.
