49ers tight ends coach Brian Fleury will interview for the Seahawks’ offensive coordinator opening
The Seattle Seahawks may have just won Super Bowl LX, but you wouldn’t be able to tell based on how they have begun the offseason. After losing offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak to the Las Vegas Raiders, where he will be their new head coach, Mike Macdonald has quickly begun a search for his replacement.
Macdonald knows just how important Kubiak was to Seattle’s success last season, which is why he is moving with a sense of urgency when it comes to finding a new offensive coordinator. Candidates for this job are still emerging, and it appears that he may be considering poaching a top assistant from one of the Seahawks’ NFC West rivals, the San Francisco 49ers.
Seahawks Interview Brian Fleury for Offensive Coordinator Opening
After spending time as the offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints, Kubiak managed to establish himself as a head coach candidate after just one season with the Seahawks. Kubiak rebuilt the team’s offense around an explosive passing attack led by Sam Darnold and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, with a dominant ground game spearheaded by Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet eventually coming to life late in the year.
Considering how much success Seattle had last season with Kubiak leading the charge, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that Macdonald wants to keep as much of his system in place as possible. With that in mind, several in-house candidates have received interviews for the job, but ever the competitor, Macdonald is taking the opportunity to meet with external candidates, too.
The latest name to emerge in this search is San Francisco 49ers run game coordinator and tight ends coach Brian Fleury. After beginning his coaching career on the defensive side of the ball, Fleury has spent the past six years working various offensive roles on Kyle Shanahan’s coaching staff. Now, he will get a shot to earn an offensive coordinator gig, as he will interview for Seattle’s vacant position.

Should the 49ers Hire Brian Fleury?

Fleury is a bit of an outside-the-box candidate, thanks in large part to his coaching background. Rather than focusing on one side of the ball, Fleury has experience working on both offense and defense, which makes him a more diverse option than other candidates. He was also a quarterback during his collegiate career, which he spent with the Maryland Terrapins and Towson Tigers.
There’s no harm in interviewing a wide variety of candidates, but it would be a surprise to Fleury get hired. His background does make him a guy that Macdonald would seemingly love to bring aboard, but the Seahawks have a good thing going on offense, which makes an internal hire seem more likely. Anything can happen in the NFL, though, which makes Fleury’s status worth keeping tabs on as this process unfolds.
