The Pittsburgh Steelers’ new coaching staff under first-year Head Coach Mike McCarthy has rounded out and come together over the last several weeks. Now, the Steelers await NFL free agency to start in March ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft, which will be hosted in the Steel City. The Steelers have several positions of need they will be looking at to help improve the 2026 team as they look to quickly retool under McCarthy. The Steelers are clear on not wanting to rebuild, but instead, restructure with McCarthy to get back to winning immediately with the Pittsburgh native on the sidelines.

The Steelers’ offense was a big culprit behind their inability to get over the hump and win a playoff game in 2025 against the Houston Texans. While the Texans had one of the NFL’s best defenses, the Steelers also failed to reach the end zone in that Wild Card Round matchup.
In fact, the Texans scored two touchdowns defensively, with the Steelers scoring just six points in the contest. That will need to change under McCarthy’s regime if the Steelers want to find success again soon in the playoffs and snap their dreaded playoff skid.
The Steelers have recently been linked to a couple of wide receivers that would help take the attention off of DK Metcalf and really put their offense in a better situation to succeed in 2026. AJ Brown or DJ Moore would be great additions to the Steelers wide receiver room, but they may need more than just one wide receiver to come to Pittsburgh and help out Metcalf.
Steelers General Manager Omar Khan has more work cut out for him in what has been a very busy offseason already for the Steelers. Now, with McCarthy’s staff rounded out, Khan has to get to work on how to improve the roster heading into the 2026 season. One wide receiver was mentioned that could come in and help out the Steelers in 2026 by Bradley Locker of Pro Football Focus (PFF).

Locker mentioned Romeo Doubs, and it would also mean a potential reunion with one particular Steeler in 2026. Doubs played alongside Aaron Rodgers during their respective times with the Green Bay Packers. In Doubs’ rookie campaign in Green Bay, he had 42 receptions for 425 yards and three touchdowns with Rodgers as his signal-caller. Those 425 yards would have been good for second-best in 2025 amongst Steelers wide receivers.
Steelers Offense Must Get Up To Speed With Rest Of NFL
Doubs, who is listed a little bit over 6’0″ and 202 pounds, would be the perfect running mate alongside Metcalf in Pittsburgh. While the Steelers await Rodgers’ official decision on whether or not he will return, Doubs would fit in great for the Steelers’ offense to take attention off of Metcalf.
Doubs received a 78.6 PFF grade over the last three seasons. He also is in the 75th percentile in the league in receiving grade vs single coverage since 2024. The single coverage grade should stand out the most with Steelers fans, as that would then cause defenses to shift more attention to Doubs and open up Metcalf on the field for Pittsburgh.

Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs works to catch a pass from Aaron Rodgers in his rookie training camp in 2022 with the Green Bay Packers.
Aside from his PFF numbers, Doubs had 55 receptions for 724 yards and six touchdowns with Green Bay in 2025. The Steelers need consistency at the wide receiver position in 2026 if they are going to take a step forward offensively.
With Doubs’ production, along with his size on the field, he would be an excellent option to complement Metcalf. He also would most likely not be the Steelers only option to improve the wide receiver room, as it has been heavily speculated that the Steelers will look to the NFL Draft as well to improve the wide receiver room.
