A former Houston Texans quarterback is getting into coaching at the NFL level.

According to multiple reports, the Arizona Cardinals plan to hire former Pro Bowl quarterback Matt Schaub as their new quarterbacks coach. This is Schaub’s second coaching job in the NFL after spending a year on the Atlanta Falcons staff in 2023.

Schaub, who spent seven seasons in Houston, played under first-time Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur during their time together in Atlanta. Schaub, who was drafted by the Falcons, has a second stint with Atlanta for four seasons as Matt Ryan’s backup.

Perhaps still the greatest quarterback in franchise history, Schaub guided Houston to its first-ever division title and playoff win under coach Gary Kubiak. He also earned a Pro Bowl nod before parting ways with Houston after the 2013 season.

Entering 2026, Schab remains the franchise’s all-time leader in passing yards (23,221) and passing touchdowns (124). He led the NFL in passing yards in 2009 with 4,770, becoming the first quarterback in franchise history to accomplish the feat.

Schaub was traded to the then-Oakland Raiders following the hiring of Bill O’Brien in 2014. Overall, he posted a 46-42 record as the starter, ending with a disastrous 2013 season that resulted in the firing of Kubiak and the earning of the No. 1 overall pick.

The Texans own nine picks in the upcoming draft, including four in the top 70.
