New York Giants incoming head coach John Harbaugh rounded out his 2026 coaching staff on Friday, a process that he admitted was “incredibly hard.”
In an interview on YouTube with sports radio icon Mike Francesa, Harbaugh outlined the difficulties of assembling a coaching staff from scratch in today’s NFL.
“I mean, like waking up at 1:32 in the morning and not being able to go back to sleep for fear that you’re not going to be able to get a good staff or get a guy. …I have guys that got texts at 3:30-4:00 in the morning, you know, ‘Are you coming? Can we get you? Would you be interested?” Harbaugh revealed, per NJ Advance Media. “Uh, it’s crazy right now.”
One such hiccup came when his offensive coordinator candidate, Todd Monken, who was Harbaugh’s OC in Baltimore, decided to take the head coaching job in Cleveland instead of following him to New Jersey. He called it a “monkey wrench” in his plans.
“Sometimes you think you’re going to get a couple, two or three guys, and they get head coaching jobs,” Harbaugh noted.

He ended up hiring Matt Nagy to the position.
With the staff now in place, Harbaugh is ready for the team to come in and see his staff working seamlessly.
“I mean, our goal is as soon as those players come back, man, they see the program, it’s in place, and we’re rolling,” Harbaugh explained. “We’re not trying to learn each other or figure each other out.”
Harbaugh brought over 15 people who worked for him in Baltimore. There will be less newness than expected. They should hit the ground running this spring.
The offseason program begins April 6 for Big Blue, as they are one of the teams that are operating under a new head coach.
